Unique Geography

Croatia is located in southern Europe on the east side of the Adriatic Sea.  It borders Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, and the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The coastline stretches for over 1700 km on the mainland.  The surrounding islands add another 4000 km of coast.  Bosnia and Herzegovina completely lacks maritime claim on the Adriatic Sea except for a tiny 20-kilometer strip jutting into southern Croatia.

Best Cities

Zagreb is the capital and most important city of Croatia.  It is not a very big tourist attraction because most of the visitors want to be on the coast.  The good news is you will be free to explore the city without massive tourist crowds.  Visit amazing museums, ancient churches, incredible recreation parks, modern architectural sites and first rate restaurants.  You will always remember the aesthetic pleasures and gastronomic satisfaction from Croatia’s capital.

The Plitvice Lakes municipality is located on the eastern border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The Plitvice Lakes are the most beautiful natural attraction in Croatia.  The area is home to a series of lakes connected by numerous waterfalls.  16 lakes make up the national park that has pathways and observation decks very close to the action.  The Plitvice Lakes are close to Zagreb and only about 80 km from the coast. 

Split is the located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea and has been a major city for over 1700 years.  There are many historical museums and old world attractions to visit before you head for the beach.  Split has endless varieties of water sport from boating to scuba diving.  You will probably spend most of your time playing in the water or laying on the beach. 

The coastline is so long that the majority of cities in Croatia are directly on the shore.  Puta, Rijeka, Zadar, Sibenik and Dubrovnik are just a few of the most popular coastal getaways.  These cities are famous for their fresh seafood and beach atmosphere, but they are also steeped in ancient history that will boggle your mind.  Make sure you explore these cities as well as relax on their beach.
