Geography

Hungary is a landlocked country in central Europe.  It is bordered by seven countries and shares its longest boundary with Slovakia (676 km).  It is a relatively flat country with a large open plain in the southeast.  The rest of the country features rolling hills and fertile valleys.

Places of Interest

Budapest is the most important city in the country.  The huge urban area spreads across the Danube River and connects with 10 bridges.  The Danube has a massive recreation area on Margret Island, accessible by two bridges on opposite ends.  There are theaters, pools, spas, sport fields and trails on the island.  Gellert Hill is located on the banks of the Danube and has a citadel, hotel and museum at the summit.  It is the former site of a military control post and now serves as a tourist attraction. 

Hungary is famous for the healing powers of its abundant hot springs.  There are tons of public facilities in Budapest and throughout Hungary.  The most famous places to bathe in rejuvenating waters are Lake Heviz, Gellbert Baths, Margret Island and Szechenyi Medicinal Bath.

Lake Balaton is the largest lake in central Europe and is often referred to as the Hungarian Sea.  This is a popular place for tourist from Hungary and abroad.  The water is very warm in the summer and usually freezes during the cold months of winter.  Many resort towns dot the coast of the lake and there is an increasing presents of young people taking advantage of the party scene.

Take your car hire south and west of Budapest to Pecs.  This is a bustling town of over 150,000 people with a variety of interesting places to see.  The Hungarian National Theater is amazing on the outside and even better on the inside.  The four tower cathedral and city walls are the most iconic symbols of the city.  The 4th century Roman Necropolis takes you into the distant past.  Pecs is a great place to discover the history of Hungary.
