Geography and Topography

Italy is a huge 600 km long peninsula protruding into the Mediterranean Sea.  The Dolomite Mountains in the north, form a jagged border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.  The Apennine Mountain range cuts down the middle of Italy and divides the east coast from the west coast.  Fertile valleys and coastal lowlands surround the mountainous terrain.
