Facts about Turkey
|
GeographyTurkey is a unique country that occupies land on the continent of Europe and Asia. It has over 7,000 km of coastline on the Black Sea, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea. It shares borders with the European countries of Greece and Bulgaria and the Asian countries of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. The landscape is made up of a high central plateau, low coastal plains and man mountain ranges. Exciting Cities With so many religious, cultural, and natural tourist attractions it is difficult to know where to start. Istanbul is the only city in the world that is in 2 continents. Divided by the Bosporus strait, Istanbul is both a European and Asian city. You can take your rental car across either of two intercontinental bridges or take a boat tour on the straight. There is plenty more to see in Istanbul on both sides of the Bosporus including the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and the modern skyline of new town. Travel into the heart of Turkey on the Asian continent and explore the amazing capital city of Ankara. This modern town was selected as the new capital city because of its central location. You can see contemporary skyscraping buildings including the landmark Atakule Tower. The 125 meter tower is used for communications and as an observation point for tourists. Ankara has a rich historical history which can be discovered at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Other ActivitiesThe vast coastlines are great destinations on a hot day. The area around the city of Mugla has a plethora of resorts that dot the Turquoise Coast. The area where the Mediterranean meats the Aegean earned its nickname for the vivacious color of the water. For other great beach destinations you can basically go anywhere the water meets the land. Long coastlines mean it is easy to find a great secluded beach or bustling beach town. Although Turkey is a great place for warm weather activities, you can still find some time for skiing in the winter months. From early January to late March you can ski in the highland mountain area. If the weather cooperates during your holiday, you could do some alpine skiing one day and swim in the sea on another. |
